Description: All counselors will experience ethical dilemmas despite a lack of complete consensus as to handle certain ethical problems. Ambiguity and competing conceptualizations of helping clients can make difficult situations seem impossible to answer. While counselors can't predict every outcome for every ethical concern, there remains very effective criteria to help counselors navigate such problems in ways that are evidence-based and make considerations regarding client unique needs. Participants in this presentation will identify several common ethical dilemmas. Participants will identify competing ethical principles to dilemmas to create a foundation of conceptualization of each dilemma. Participants will apply an ethical decision making model to various ethical problems. Finally, participants will identify ways to navigate supporting clients and themselves following the results of steps to manage ethical dilemmas.

Objectives:

1. Participants in this presentation will identify several common ethical dilemmas.

2. Participants will identify competing ethical principles to dilemmas to create a foundation of conceptualization of each dilemma.

3. Participants will apply an ethical decision making model to various ethical problems.

4. Participants will identify ways to navigate supporting clients and themselves following the results of steps to manage ethical dilemmas.

About the Presenter:

Fredrick Dombrowski is the AMHCA Past President and has extensive experience treating those living with co-occurring disorders since 1998. He has been a supervisor and director for multiple programs including inpatient, outpatient, and forensic treatment. Currently a Department Chair at the University of Bridgeport, he is focused on experiential learning through a perspective of cultural humility and an equitable clinical care. He has recently published the book Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders and has appeared on television, radio, and internet advocating for the helping professions. He has won several awards for his work with marginalized populations.
